I’ve been kind of distracted these past few days because I found a shiny new video game. And it’s free, too. I almost didn’t download it because it’s an online game, and I totally don’t play those. But a couple of trailers popped up in my Steam recommendations and I was like, “Hmmm, this looks interesting.” Then I found out it has a solo mode and, as I mentioned, is free. Free is my favorite price, so I figured, “Okay, I’ll try this out.”
I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday, y’all. I checked first to make sure it wasn’t some pay-to-win nonsense. Thankfully, all the microtransactions are cosmetic. No problem there because the devs have to eat, and if someone wants to drop $14 on a virtual outfit, good for them. I don’t have that kind of money right now, but if I did, I’d probably buy an outfit or two just to support the devs.
Anyway, the game is called Where Winds Meet, if you’re curious, and I’ve been really enjoying it. It’s apparently a wuxia game — a term I’d literally never heard before this — which means lots of mystical martial-arts fantasy and wandering-swordsman energy. It’s set in ancient China. And let me tell you this for nuthin’, this game looks gorgeous. Like, “I’m just going to stand here and stare at the scenery for a minute” levels of gorgeous. (Featured image is a screenshot. I’m still learning the photo mode)
I haven’t touched any of the online events yet, even though people keep saying they’re great. But those are the hardcore min/max MMO types, and I ain’t one of them. I generally avoid online games like the plague. Like, my character has been wandering around injured because I don’t want to deal with healers. But this person pointed out that this game is perfect for introverts, and apparently I can summon a healer without interacting. Ha!
So far I’ve got about 12 hours in, and I’m having a great time. It’s that constant “just one more quest… oh, what’s over there?” thing that happens in open-world games — IYKYK. Before I play today, though, I have to do… stuff. You know, adult things like call the vet, go shopping, do the dishes because, like, I played most of the day yesterday. But I am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult, so I’ll get things done before I fire up the game. I have willpower. I do! You’ll see. 🙂
All that said, this isn’t normally my kind of game. The menu is super intimidating — someone called it the biggest boss in the game, and they weren’t lying. But I’m muddling through. Same with the combat. Big bosses are… not my thing, so I’ve mostly been ignoring them and just exploring. That was a huge selling point for me — the open world. This game wants you to explore. I feel like I haven’t even touched a quarter of the map yet, and I’m not rushing at all.
Anyway, I have a new shiny game to play, and it’s free! Is it perfect? Not even close. But I’m enjoying it so far, and the price was right. So if you don’t hear from me as often as you’re used to, that’s why. Thanks for reading, y’all. I appreciate you taking the time. Take care of yourself, and I’ll chat at you later.
