So, I mentioned a few posts back that I’ve been going through a fatigue flare these past seven months. That means I haven’t had the energy to do much of anything but sit here and watch videos. And weirdly, I’ve gotten strangely addicted to Chinese dramas of the vertical kind. I’m not subscribed to any sites or anything and I don’t pay to watch them. I watch compilations on YouTube with weird titles like “Reborn, I realized my Yandere best friend loved me all along. I kissed him and he cherished me forever.”
And I can’t even tell you why, really. Like, a lot of them are just… bad. The story is awful, the actors look straight out of grade school — they’re all standing there with their hands at their sides reciting their lines — and the sets are super cheap. A good deal of them are… okay. Like, the story is meh but the acting carries it or vica versa. And I can deal with that. The one I’m watching now is like that. Okay story, acting is adequate and they didn’t go too cheap on the set design. But then come the good ones and it just gives me the warm fuzzies. Those are few and far between though.
One thing I absolutely love about watching them though is the subtitles. Apparently they’re AI generated most of the time so things get rather… interesting. See, Chinese does not have gendered pronouns so when the subtitles are generated they’ll just toss any pronoun in there and you get things like I told me to get out of here or misgendering people all over the place. I really have to pay attention to who is talking about what to figure out what’s being said.
Plus the translators will… well… translate Chinese names so instead of using the name say Wen Li they’ll come up with Arts and Sciences which is the literal translation of the name I guess. I thought that was hysterical because the characters are all, “Hey, are you Arts and Sciences?” and I was like Wha…? And, of course, she was also called, Wendy, Lily (for LiLi) and Lately in the subtitles. Poor girl had so many names. But it was a good show, so I enjoyed it despite the weird subtitles. I also learned that shuàigē means “handsome guy” in that one because that’s what they kept calling the male lead. Ha!
Anyway, I’ve been trying to wean myself off of these vertical dramas, but… I honestly don’t have the energy to do much of anything else. I did pick up knitting again and I’m making a scarf. I might have it done by the time I need a scarf. And I did make a shirt — hand sewn — over the last seven months. Started another but that one got sidelined because it didn’t quite work out. Crocheted a blanket. So I haven’t been sitting here like a vegetable. I just haven’t done much else either. ^_^
Thanks for reading my rambling y’all. Take care, and I’ll chat at you later.
